Magpie Monday - Slim Pickings

Phew what a busy week!  I was away at the weekend too at Cybher - the blogging conference - so my thrifting opportunities were severely limited.

After last week's boot sale I'm itching to get back to another one, but I guess that will have to wait til next weekend.

On a whistle-stop visit to my local charity shop, I did manage to find these two items which I'm very happy with - providing I can get into the skirt.  I think I may be in denial about my waist line - especially after this weekend's excesses!

Abstract print linen skirt in burnt umber by Minuet - £2.99

Bead and fabric ribbon necklace - £1.75

Cybher - my musings

This weekend, thanks to my lovely sponsors DYLON, I attended Cybher - the UK's first all genre blogger conference for females.

Due to absolute technology failure on the day (both my phone and my ipad went loopy with the excitement of it all) I was unable to share many thoughts via the medium of Twitter.  So instead, I'm writing them down here so I have a record of my time and a reference to come back to so I can keep focused on what's important to me.

Firstly, I think Sian did a monumental job - what a Herculean task.  Her and her team have every right to feel proud.

Secondly, what I enjoyed most was the chance to meet up with blogging friends old and new.  To finally meet in the flesh people I've spoken to for donkey's on Twitter.  People who have shared their highs and lows through their blog.

It may seem odd that I shared a room with someone I'd never even met before, but Amanda felt like a dear friend, and now we've met in person I'm sure we'll remain close friends in real life.

I found the talks from Di Coke (competitions and the law) fascinating and really interesting.  The presentation by A Thrifty Mrs on incorporating money-saving into your blog was also very entertaining and her personality shone through.

However, I was let a little deflated by some of the sessions.  I guess it's the world we're in now but there seemed to be a fair amount of doom and gloom - you can't do this; you mustn't do this; be careful if you do that; don't do this or you'll get your ass sued...

I also found the idea that not everyone can blog a little arrogant.  I strongly disagree - the tools are there, they are freely available to anyone and everyone who wants to write a blog.  True, not everyone can write an award-winning blog, a blog that will be top of the charts or a blog that will give them commercial success, fame and fortune.  But that makes assumptions about an individual's motivation to blog.

We all have different reasons for doing what we do.  Yes it takes hard work, effort and skill to come up with entertaining, engaging and regular new material, but it doesn't mean anyone can't try.  If we perpetuate the idea that bloggers are an elite bunch then how are we to encourage and motivate the next new wave of blog writers?

There was also a lot of talk about finding your 'niche'.  I agree that to be top of your game and achieve sucess you do need to be focused and stand out from the crowd, but again this is making assumptions that that's what we all aspire to.  The reality is there are millions of blogs out there in cyberspace - how many niches are there?  Yes, I could write a blog about owning a smelly Labrador with an underactive thyroid - I may even win an award for the best blog about a smelly Labrador with an underactive thyroid - but how dull would that be?

I am more than one thing.  I am mother; partner; friend; crafter; thrifter.  I wear clothes; I eat; I drink; I go out; I buy stuff; I do stuff.  That is me and that's what I write about.  A blogger's real USP is their self.

I write my blog because I enjoy it.  It's fun.  I don't want to lose sight of that.  I want to enjoy the fantastic benefits of being part of a motivating; supportive and diverse community.  I want to continue to write with integrity; fairness and passion about what interests me.  To support brands I respect and small businesses I admire.  To make more friends and meet like-minded people.  Above all, to not get hung up on the competitiveness and the politics.

Keep calm and carry on blogging!

Kid's hair Wild n' Crazy? Enter my giveaway...

Come have a sneaky peak at my mornings.  Imagine the scene:

It's 10-to-school-run time.  I have already spent half and hour arguing debating with Ruby whether or not wearing her tutu to nursery is a good idea.  I have wrestled and managed to turn her top the correct way round.  We've had a little paddy about which colour toothbrush to use, then when we finally settle on the purple one, suddenly the toothpaste is too minty. No you cannot eat your breakfast in front of Nick Jr...Finally emerging from upstairs with her nursery bag she went up for 20 minutes ago, I notice that her hair looks like Russell Brand's after a 2 week bender.

And so it begins...The histrionics from hair brushing are worthy of an Oscar each morning - or at least loud enough to alert Social Services.  We finally leave the house late for nursery, red-faced, angry and sweaty - that's both of us. Again.

Sound familiar?

Seriously, I have no idea what she does at night to wake up with matted dreadlocks.  I've tried plaiting it at night, but apparently it's uncomfortable and she can't lie on it. We've tried so many different products and sprays but my daughter can find a fatal flaw in each and every one of them: smells funny/don't like the colour of the bottle/makes her cough/doesn't work/doesn't like the picture on the label...Jeez!

Finally, we may have hit upon the solution.  DGJ Organics kids range seems to tick all the boxes for her, and from my point of view is great because they use certified organic ingredients and no harmful parabens or SLS.

The Wild n' Crazy Watermelon Shampoo is my favourite - it smells delicious and has a detangling effect.  This makes life so so much easier.  For days when we're not washing her hair, we use a spritz of the Watermelon Detangling spray to lessen the screams.

The DGJ Organics Wild 'n' Crazy hair range is available from Waitrose but I have a set of 3 products to give away.  The lucky winner will get the 2 products shown above, plus the delicious smelling banana and berry shampoo.

To enter the competition, simply leave me a comment on how you make hair washing/bathtime less stressful and more fun.  One lucky winner will be picked at random.

For an extra entry, please tweet the following: I'm entering @missielizzieb's blog competition to win the Wild 'n' Crazy kid's hair range from @dgjorganics here: http://bit.ly/LpNDox.

Make sure you leave a separate comment saying you have tweeted.  Please also remember to leave a way to contact you - email address or Twitter name.

Closing date is 12:00 Monday 21 May 2012.  Open to UK only.

Disclosure: The prize will be fulfilled by DGJ Organics.  I was sent a set of products free of charge for the purposes of this review.  Any opinion expressed is my own.

I'm Baking Mad - Jubilee Ice Cream Cupcakes

If, like me you're always on the lookout for exciting new recipes to try, you must check out the Baking Mad website.  It's packed with easy to follow recipes, delicious cakes and bakes and helpful hints and tips.

I thought I'd while away the morning cupcake making and I used their recipe for ice cream cone cupcakes - with a little Jubilee- themed tweaking. Because we're trialling Ruby on a cow's milk free diet, I substituted the butter for a dairy-free alternative.  It worked well in the cake, but less so on the icing - it was a bit too sloppy so didn't hold the swirl as well as I'd hoped.

I've always fancied having a go at these, but I couldn't figure out how you baked the cakes in the cones without the wafer burning.  Who'd have know it - they give you a top tip for that too!

The recipe was easy to follow, the only tip I'd add would be to remove the tin foil from the cones as soon as possible after baking, otherwise the condensation makes them soggy.  The website allows for reviews to each recipe - so I can add it there for others to see.

There are so many gorgeous recipes to choose from. Plenty to whet my appetite and keep in store for when the veg patch starts to provide - butternut squash chocolate cake,  rhubarb and ginger cake and rosemary sandwich cake.

There are lots of seasonal recipes and loads of ideas for jubilee tea parties and union jack themes.

The site had loads of really useful features.  Some of my favourites are:

  • measurement converter on each recipe
  • links from each ingredient to the product - helpful for checking out any allergy issues and useful to know what you're looking for on the supermarket shelf!
  • you can highlight each part of the recipe so you don't lose your place as you go along
  • there's the option to enlarge the text or print out
  • you can save it to your online recipe book on their site
  • handy share buttons so you pass it on to friends and family by Tweet or Facebook

There are also expert baking tips; great competitions and a brilliant section on kid's baking.  Go on, check it out, or give them a follow on Twitter.

Magpie Monday - Wooden it be lovely

Hurrah, the Old Man agreed we could go to the car boot sale yesterday - the first one I've been to in, well it feels like forever.  The trade off was we had to go and watch him play squash first.

Yawn.  I sat patiently and watched 2 sweaty grown men chase a tiny rubber ball about a glass cell for an eternity, drumming my fingers and cursing all the unknown treasure that was being snatched up early.  I moaned in the car on the way there that there would be nothing left and all the good stuff will have been nabbed.  Annoyingly, he is one of these 'c'est la vie' types - chill out, we'll get there when we get there...yadda...yadda...

To instantly rub salt into my wounds, the very first stall I went to had the most beautiful Victorian chair.  I mean, this was exquisite.  Stunning. Perfect.  'How much for the chair?' I enquired. 'Sorry love, it's sold'.  My heart broke a tiny bit.  I glared and silently spat 'SEE??!' at the Old Man.  Oh well, I won't ask how much it went for I said (why make myself even more miserable).  Can you believe it, the stall holder shouted after me 'I let it go for a fiver'.

WHAT???  WHAT???  FIVE POUNDS?  She had to be kidding.  'I'd have paid £20 I told her, maybe more'. Ha, two can play at the missed opportunities game.  On my second - or was it third - skulk past, the chair was still sitting there, uncollected and unloved. Taunting me.

Still, I picked myself up and got looking.  All my items this week were wooden, or wood related, and even though the chair would have been the piece de resistance, I'm quite pleased with my haul.

I'd been on the lookout for a set of wooden step ladders for ages.  I want to paint some up and stand them in the garden with plants on, but they go for a fortune on eBay.  I spotted a set lying down and as penance, sent Him Indoors to find out the price.  He redeemed himself slightly by returning to tell me the chap wanted £10, but he'd bought them for me for a fiver.

They are truly lovely, but huge!  The lying-down-ness of them disguised their massive height, but still.  I'm now wondering if I can make room for them in the house.  Perhaps as a quirky shelving unit or a towel holder in the bathroom...

A lady with some beautiful items on her stall had a whole load of National Trust paint.  For exterior wood it will be just the ticket for my current projects.  She wanted £10 for the whole lot - about 9 tins.  It was all the same colour, a pale cornflower blue.  But the voice of doom next to me said no way - what if it's all off?  Argh, is he determined to ruin my day?  Anyway, I bought one tin for £2, and of course got it home to find it was perfect.  I knew it would be, I shouldn't have listened.

I spotted this whimsical little kitchen stamper on a stall for 20p.  Perfect for marking cookies.

I pacified Ruby who was whining for an ice cream with this chunky wooden tractor.  She seemed delighted that the steering wheel 'worked' the front wheels.

Finally, I think my favourite thing was this little ruler.  I paid 50p for it and just love it.

What era do you think it's from?  The 50s?  I'm not sure, but I will display it and smile at it.

What did you manage to get second-hand?  Do you have a voice of doom who comes with you?  Or do you leave him at home?!

Working with PR companies - an interview with Louise Harris, Founder of Rock and Roll Baby World

I'm thrilled that Louise Harris has agreed to talk to me about her work in PR and some of the exciting clients she works with.

If you're a blogger who'd like to know more about how PRs tick, or just a reader of blogs who wants to understand how the relationships work and why companies ask blogs to write reviews, then read on...

Can you tell us about Rock and Roll Baby World. How it came about and what you do?

Rock and Roll Baby World is a pr and marketing agency, we are split into two divisions on one side we handle baby, family and parenting PR and are parent blogging specialists. Our clients range from fashion, toys, album, DVD and Book Releases, Luxury family hotels and many more.

The other part of the agency is dedicated to music promotion of artists and bands that have single or album releases coming out or need promotion for a tour.

I started the agency after the birth of my second daughter whilst on maternity leave, I became a parent blogger myself and made lots of relationships with other parent bloggers. My mission was to treat bloggers with the same respect as I would a national newspaper journalist this was important to me as so many other pr agencies use bloggers to pad out a campaign when they are struggling to get other coverage I knew that a blogging campaign in its own right could make a real difference to a brand so I really wanted to specialise in this area.

I had also set up a baby pr division in the company I previously worked for so I had lots of contacts in the national and regional media too and it came as a natural addition to the blogging campaigns as I found the clients really wanted to utilise my knowledge in this area so I found myself providing a full service campaign.

Because of my music and entertainment roots I quickly gained clients in this field some I had worked with before and thankfully word of mouth spread and we have been keeping really busy. Earlier this year we set up the music side of the company this came about after I left my old company who I was consulting for and it meant there wasn't a clash of interests and luckily my boss gave me his full backing. I am known as primarily a music pr this is what I've done for over 12 years and I really love it! I've worked with lots of big names from Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Russell Crowe, Meat Loaf, Robin Gibb, Van Morrison, Sir Cliff Richard, Chris Rea, Robert Palmer, Simple Minds, Human League, Russell Watson and many more.

My specialist area is more the household names and classic acts and they are such fun to work with.

Who are some of your clients at the moment?

Currently on the Baby Side we have some great projects from The Land of Sometimes, Blade & Rose, Rockfords Rock Opera, Splats, Smart Mum UK (Home of Teething Bling, The Book Club and we are just about to start working with a fantastic new online boutique called Babatude.

On the Music side some really exciting projects coming up one of which I can't tell you about yet its top secret but its a well known band that have a new album out in September! Other acts include YolanDa Brown, The London Community Gospel Choir, Billie Myers and Michael Armstrong.

Tell us about working with bloggers. What do you look for in a blogger and how do you choose which blogs to work with?

I look at their blog, look at how they write, what their interests are, how old are their children etc so we can make sure what we are offering them is going to be of interest. I also look at Twitter to see how many followers they have and if they have a Facebook page too.

I am not too concerned about blog rankings, it does help but I like talking to new bloggers who are just starting out if your writing style is good and your blog is super snazzy then that is good enough for me! There are some projects where we do have to make sure they have a big outreach so we would in that case take everything into consideration.

We choose to work with the blogs we feel would love the project we are working on at the time.

What do you think is the key to good blogger/PR relationships?

Communication! If a blogger emails about a project or they respond to a tweet its really helpful to include your details in a signature at the bottom of your email so we can refer back to it. We love the bloggers who send us a link once they have reviewed that’s so helpful we check the web most days but its just great to have a good review land in your inbox they we can post on the clients Facebook page and send the link to them.

It is very rare for us to get a blogger who says they are going to do a review and then you can never get hold of them again, thankfully all the bloggers we use are just brilliant but we have had a couple of occasions when posts haven't run its really disappointing especially when a lot of effort has been made to send on a trip or a special review pack has been sent out.

I didn't want to be one of the pushy pr agencies we won't stalk people and chase them for review again and again we will follow up of course but we want to work with mutually respectful people.

How do you think bloggers can help promote your clients and what to blogs offer that's different to traditional media?

They are real parents with honest opinions their reviews make a difference as their readers are spot on the clients audience they want to reach, they are trusted sources of information and their opinions can make a huge difference to a campaign.

Its great for google too to see lots of lovely reviews come up and unlike getting a piece in a national paper or regional paper its quite hit and miss if your target market will read it but on a blog you are hitting your target market every time.

What's the best thing about your job?

Being able to combine working and still being around for my two daughters who are both still under the age of 5, I work 4 days a week but on the days I am working I can still make their dinner and be there to put them to bed!

Also being able to take them to shows through my work and they have been backstage at concerts, they also get to trial lots of products and reap the benefits of having a mum in this line of work! My eldest is always asking me is that Justin on the phone (Justin Fletcher!)

What's coming next for Rock and Roll Baby World?

This next 12 months will be about continuing the good work we have started expanding, getting an office, and adding members to the team.

If any bloggers are reading this and want to work with you, how should they get in touch?

They should email me with their blog URL, name, address and ages of children and then I can add them to our list and if anything comes up we can get in touch. Also they should sign up to the website feed / Facebook and also follow on Twitter as that’s where we put most of our requests out.
