Planning a new kitchen

So, we've decided to put off the garage conversion (and wedding for that matter - how romantic are we?) and concentrate instead on a new kitchen.

I hate it as it is at the moment, it's a small galley kitchen and as a consequence it gets very cluttered.  That may or may not have something to do with my hoarding tendencies.  We don't have enough storage, or enough worktop.  The current dishwasher sticks out like a sore thumb, so thinking about which dishwasher is a big consideration to the flow of the kitchen.

We've decided to go with an integrated one and probably an integrated fridge freezer, just because I think it will look sleeker and hopefully give the impression the kitchen is bigger than it actually is.

I know I don't want real wood worktops again - despite my promises I never looked after them properly and they do take a lot of maintenance.  Seriously, who has time to be oiling worktops?

We've been thinking of going for a style of cupboard that has no protruding handles, again because it will give a smoother line, but so far the only ones I've seen have been ultra-modern and space-age and that's just not us.

I'm having real difficulty settling on a style - I don't want chunky wooden traditional or shaker, but nor do I want hi-tech.  It's such a huge outlay to have a new kitchen we need to pick something we love.

So I'm asking for your help.  If you spot anything in a magazine or on a website you think I might like, can you give me a shout.  Any suggestions gratefully received because if I look at another kitchen brochure, I think I may scream.

  1. Yesterday started my 1970's kitchen remodel. The kitchen is rectangle in shape and does not allow me to change the footprint, but I can update the cabinets, countertops, flooring and appliances. It took me over three months to decided on what cabinets to choose. I brought home sample doors for weeks until I narrowed down my choices and finally picked one. Good luck with your remodel it is a daunting experience. I am told it gets worse before it gets better, counting the days until it does get better!

  2. Oh wow, good luck with your project! I have to say, the whole - it's-worse-before-it-gets-better thing is the reason I put everything off for so long. I watch these renovation programmes and wonder how on earth they put up with it!

  3. I just keep falling in love with red kitchens. Could be really fab in a galley kitchen. But having seen your post on your antique bathroom, and given it is a small space, how about getting a joiner to do something? We have Mark's pine palace near us that will do bespoke stuff but very cheapy, you design it with them, bit rustic and would prob blend in well. Good Luck!

    1. Ahh good memory! Yes, our house is very Victorian and the people who did it up before us went to a lot of trouble to get reclaimed items.

I'm actually wondering if I could get away with a 50s style kitchen - keep my love of vintage, but be a bit more funky and colourful? Decisions decisions...

  4. ooo how exciting, I love redecorating. Have you considered having a free standing kitchen instead of a fixed one? It can be really fun sourcing all of the bits for it :-)

  5. Ditched the wedding for a kitchen? That was my same decision only I went for the wedding and am now back to square one saving for my dream kitchen. I'll come back in a few years and see how you got on but best of luck with your new project

  6. What did you decide upon? You simply must let us know! You have some pretty good ideas and I completely sympathize with the need to be completely in love with the design before installation actually begins. Hopefully it all turned out well for you and you found something you were truly enthralled with.

  7. I’m impressed, I must say. Actually rarely do you encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve got hit the nail to the head. Your notion is outstanding; the issue is an issue that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that we found this at my look for something about it. kitchen remodel
