The White Woods - fun in the forest in the snow

Is there anything so beautiful and magical as the forest in the snow?  It takes on a fairy-tale quality and opens up so many play opportunities.

Snowball fights are an obvious choice

or seek out some snow shelters

do some slippy, snowy balancing

...it seems you're never too old for this one

follow wild animal prints and work out who's made them

ooh I wonder what happens if we shake these...

...we can make it snow!

finally, no snow day is complete without a snow angel or two.

Check out the Forestry Commission website for your nearest forest and lots of activity sheets to download, or pick up leaflets, worksheets and collection bags printed with leaf and animal print identifications from the visitor centre.

We are official Forestry Commission reviewers and receive an annual discovery pass.

  1. That looks like so much fun! And the forest is so pretty with snow covering the trees. I have to say the snow has mostly melted here today though, and I'm pretty happy about that. ;)

    1. Thanks Jo. It really was stunning, it looked so serene. Well it was serene until we arrived and the girls tried to make the trees 'avalanche' by shouting loudly! x

  2. Wow Liz you really have had loads of snow! That looks like a wonderful afternoon, I bet you had to keep moving so as not to get cold! Lovely pictures and Ruby is growing up so fast in every picture I see at the moment! Thank you for sharing on Country Kids.

  3. great photos, it looks so beautiful. we don't have a wood in walking distance to us so the main problem with snow days is getting to a wood safely. we made do with a field.

    1. Ahh that's a shame Monko, but fields are good also :0)

    2. Know what you mean Monko, some rural roads still a bit dicey. When the weather perks up try plugging your postcode into visitwoods.org.uk- you might be surprised! It covers most woods that welcome visitors, including all the main FC, Wildlife Trust & National Trust places.

  4. Looks like a great day out! I love seeing people embrace the snow rather than moan about it,

    1. Too true Aqeela - I LOVE snow, and so should kids. I can't bear them being conditioned through school closures etc that snow = bad.
